Book Review: Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella

In my review of the first book, Confessions of a Shopaholic I really hated Becky and the book in general made me pretty mad.  I decided since it was my plan for Bout of Books 8.0 I would give her one more try.  Here is my review of Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella

Surprise, surprise…Becky did not learn her lesson from the first book.  Now with higher credit limits from attempting to go debt free last time around she’s worse than ever.  By changing the setting to NYC it all just seems to be on a larger scale.  I just find it impossible to relate to someone who is so desperate for the attention of others that she just keeps buying things.

You’re not supposed to be rooting for the people who are yelling at the main character…but I really was.  After everything hit the fan we got to hear from a few minor characters some of the things I had been thinking all along.  The only piece that was missing is that she should take a cold hard look at why she overspends.  With that kind of spending getting to the point of an addiction wouldn’t she need to get some professional help?

That’s why I just can’t keep going on with this series.  The money comes in at the end, she ‘learns her lesson’ and gets a new job that will pay the future bills (oh and of course everything works out with Luke).  We’re supposed to cheer at the end but is anything actually going to change?  If Becky is not even trying to figure out where that desperation need for approval from spending money comes from I can’t see her being any better in the future.  I just don’t care to read any more of the same old story.  I give it one out of five stars.
