Book Review: The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce

This is the 3rd book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet.  Here is my review of The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce.

The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (Song of the Lioness, Book 3) - Tamora Pierce

What I like about this story is that it’s all about Alanna coming to terms with the other aspects of herself.  We already know she is a warrior who earned her shield, but this is where she starts to come to terms with the fact that she is a woman who has skill with magic.  By changing the setting to a new land with different people, it has a different feel than the first two books.  We get introduced to some new and interesting characters.

My biggest complaint about this book is the turnaround of the romantic aspect of the story.  In the previous book it really wasn’t so bad, but they way it’s handled in this book is probably one of the worst I remember ever reading.  I understand wanting to properly address her changing relationship with both Jonathan and George.  It’s just such a fast swap that it essentially cheapens both relationships.

While we get a little closure in the immediate story, it is clearly building up to the final story.  Still overall I like this book.  I give it three out of five stars.
